Way Out
Travel is imagined, described and sensed. This bench embodies that. It’s curves representing travellers gathering around or travel paths to a space (the seat). The joint details portray people meeting and embracing each other. This imaginary expression is also a traditional belief in Ming chairs.
I selected one type of Ming chair, Quanyi, in which the round back curve represents the sky, and the squared seat the earth. When one sits in the chair, one is embraced by the universe. In this project, I have used storytelling as a method to reinterpret the Ming chair and remove it from conventions.
